Dr. Jagveer Singh Saluja, MDS Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (Rama Dental College, 2010), 16 years experience. Facial trauma, wisdom tooth surgery, maxillofacial reconstruction, and complex extractions — only at NABH-accredited Saluja Dento Max Fac Centre.

What is Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialized branch of dentistry dealing with surgical treatment of the mouth, jaws, face, and neck. It includes tooth extractions (simple and surgical), wisdom tooth removal (impaction surgery), facial trauma treatment, jaw surgery, cyst/tumor removal, and reconstructive procedures.

Dr. Jagveer Singh Saluja is one of the few MDS-qualified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons in Kanpur, with 16 years of surgical experience. This is a rare specialization — most Kanpur dental clinics do not have an in-house surgeon.

At Saluja Dento Max Fac Centre, having an MDS surgeon on-site means you receive expert surgical care without being referred elsewhere. From simple extractions to complex facial trauma reconstruction — it’s all handled under one NABH-accredited roof.

When is Surgery Needed?

Common conditions that require oral & maxillofacial surgery.

Impacted Wisdom Tooth

→ Tooth trapped in jawbone, pressing on nerve

Wisdom teeth often lack space to erupt properly, becoming impacted against adjacent teeth or the jawbone — causing pain, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth.

Facial Trauma

→ Accident, sports injury — fractured jaw, avulsed teeth

Road accidents, sports injuries, or falls can fracture the jaw, break teeth, or cause tooth avulsion (knocked-out teeth) requiring immediate surgical intervention.

Severe Decay

→ Tooth beyond restoration

When decay destroys so much tooth structure that fillings or crowns can’t save it, surgical extraction becomes necessary to prevent infection spread to the bone.

Infection / Abscess

→ Spreading infection needing surgical intervention

Untreated infections can form abscesses (pus pockets) that require surgical drainage and extraction of the source tooth to prevent systemic infection.

Cyst / Tumor

→ Pathological growth in jaw

Jaw cysts and tumors require surgical enucleation (removal) to prevent bone destruction and potential malignancy. Pathological examination confirms diagnosis.

Failed RCT

→ Apicoectomy needed

When a root canal treatment fails (persistent infection at the root tip), an apicoectomy surgically removes the infected root tip and seals the canal from below.

Oral Surgery FAQs

Answers to the most common questions about oral & maxillofacial surgery.

Is wisdom tooth removal painful? +

No. Wisdom tooth removal is performed under local anesthesia — you won’t feel pain during the procedure, only pressure. For impacted wisdom teeth, surgical extraction is needed (opening the gum and removing bone to access the tooth). Post-operative soreness for 3-5 days is normal and well-managed with prescribed pain relievers. Our painless injection technology ensures even the anesthesia delivery is comfortable.

How long is recovery after oral surgery? +

Recovery depends on the procedure: Simple extractions heal in 3-7 days. Surgical extractions (impacted wisdom teeth) take 5-10 days. Facial trauma surgery takes 2-4 weeks. Swelling peaks at 48 hours and subsides over 5-7 days. Sutures are removed (or dissolve) at 7-10 days. Complete bone healing takes 3-6 months but normal function returns much sooner. Following post-op instructions speeds recovery.

When should I see an oral surgeon? +

See an oral surgeon if you have: impacted wisdom teeth, severe toothache from a damaged tooth, facial trauma (accident/injury), jaw pain or clicking, difficulty opening your mouth, a lump or swelling in the jaw, loose teeth from gum disease, a tooth broken below the gum line, or a failed root canal. If your general dentist recommends surgical extraction or refers you to a surgeon, Dr. Jagveer Singh Saluja — MDS Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery — is available in-house at our clinic.

What is an impacted tooth? +

An impacted tooth is one that fails to fully erupt into its normal position because it’s blocked by bone, gum tissue, or other teeth. Wisdom teeth are the most commonly impacted — they often lack space in the jaw and become stuck (horizontal, angled, or partially erupted). Impacted teeth can cause pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, cysts, and crowding. Treatment is surgical extraction using a CBCT scan for precise planning.

Can facial trauma be treated at a dental clinic? +

Yes — dental-specific facial trauma (fractured jaw, knocked-out teeth, dental avulsion, alveolar fractures) is best treated by an oral & maxillofacial surgeon at a dental clinic with surgical capability. Dr. Jagveer Singh Saluja is a maxillofacial trauma specialist with 16 years of experience. However, for severe polytrauma (multiple body injuries, head injury, life-threatening bleeding), go to a hospital ER first — then come to us for dental/jaw treatment.

What is apicoectomy? +

Apicoectomy (root-end surgery) is a surgical procedure performed when a root canal treatment has failed and infection persists at the root tip. The surgeon makes a small incision in the gum near the tooth root, removes the infected root tip (2-3 mm), cleans the area, and seals the root canal from below. This saves the tooth from extraction when re-treating the root canal from the top isn’t possible. Recovery takes 5-7 days.

Is oral surgery safe? +

Yes — oral surgery is very safe when performed by a qualified MDS surgeon in a properly equipped clinic. At our NABH-accredited clinic, we follow hospital-grade surgical safety protocols: verified sterilization, trained surgical staff, emergency preparedness, proper monitoring equipment, and documented surgical procedures. Dr. Jagveer Singh Saluja’s 16 years of surgical experience and MDS qualification ensure procedures are performed to the highest safety standards.

Do I need general anesthesia? +

Most oral surgery procedures are performed under local anesthesia — which is sufficient for extractions, wisdom teeth, and apicoectomies. General anesthesia or IV sedation is recommended for: complex facial trauma reconstruction, extensive jaw surgery, multiple extractions in one sitting, or for patients with severe dental anxiety. Dr. Saluja will discuss your options and recommend the safest, most comfortable approach based on your specific procedure and medical history.

How much does oral surgery cost in Kanpur? +

Cost depends on the procedure: Simple extraction is the most affordable, surgical extraction/wisdom tooth is moderate, and maxillofacial surgery/trauma is higher. We offer three pricing tiers — Basic, Standard, and Premium — with EMI options for treatments above ₹10,000. CGHS/ECHS/ESI/UP Police accepted. Your first consultation is free — we’ll provide a transparent cost estimate before any procedure. Visit our pricing page for details.

Does CGHS cover oral surgery? +

Yes — CGHS/ECHS/ESI/UP Police empanelment covers many oral surgery procedures, especially those that are medically necessary (extractions due to decay/trauma, abscess drainage, cyst removal). Coverage is particularly relevant for facial trauma cases. Cosmetic procedures or elective surgeries may not be covered. Bring your empanelment card and valid ID — our team handles all documentation for cashless treatment. We’ll clarify exactly what’s covered during your free consultation.
